The Final Goodbye
I will always remember that picture.
Surrounded by his four granddaughters.
On a sunny day in Florida,
Carrying those brightly colored pool noodles under his arm, He loved to take us to the pool.
I did not realize what those bright colors symbolized,
How fun and energetic this man was.
But once he got sick, there were only small flashes of those colors. But we were always seeing him in the hospital.
The Hawaiian shirt and swim trunks,
Exchanged for a hospital gown.
Those bright noodles, now intervenes tubes.
But his personality still shone through. Still living for those he loved.
I visited for the last time.
But the love was still there.
Held our hands for the last time,
No evidence of weakness.
Only that tight squeeze
Before our final goodbye.
